Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that is inserted into the uterus as a long-term method of preventing pregnancy. The device comes in the form of a T-shaped plastic frame that releases the hormone progestin, Mirena into the body. The hormone thickens the cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus. As a result, sperm is unable to enter the fallopian tubes. Mirena also works by partially suppressing ovulation.

How Much Does Mirena Cost

Mirena is the only hormonal IUD that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its seal of approval in the United States. Mirena is meant to prevent pregnancy for up to five years after insertion.

Cost of Mirena
Average costs for IUD devices range between $500 and $1,000 up front with some methods lasting up to 12 years. As for Mirena, the birth control costs an average of between $300 and $500 – depending on insurance and location. For example, a Planned Parenthood in San Diego, California charges $550 for Mirena [1].

Coverage for birth control varies according to private health insurance policies and other types of insurance. Medicaid may sometimes cover the costs of certain birth control methods. In general, family planning clinics charge less than private health-care providers. On the average, the cost of the exam, insertion of Mirena, and follow up visit may range from $175 to $500 [2].
